Tuesday, August 21st, 2007| The 2nd Annual WNC Run/Walk for Autism will be held on September 8, 2007, at Deerfields, a mountain retreat 20 miles south of Asheville. This satellite event of the Ribbon Run includes a 5 K trail run/race, as well as the Diamond Brand Outdoors 1- Mile Fun Run/Walk, a Walk Lite, and the Tot Trot. This year’s event will be in memory of Sara Handlan, a lifetime friend of the autism community;
Sara lived in Western North Carolina and passed away last year.Runners and walkers alike are enthusiastic about the beautiful trail among the trees, ponds, and bountiful nature of Deerfields. For a weekend adventure, Deerfields is offering camping. Reservations are required. To purchase a weekend pass (good for one or two nights) please contact Deerfields directly at (828) 329-5003 or click here to send an email. More than a trail run, the event is also a festival for all—with expanded children’s activities in a nearby orchard, old-time music by the campfire, snacks, and great door-prize drawings. Deerfields is an autism-friendly space with lots of places to get away from the crowd; new this year is a designated chill-out, quiet area. There will also be several fun but meaningful activities to celebrate Sara Handlan’s life and her life’s work in the field of autism. Ted E. Tourist, the mascot from the Asheville Tourists’ baseball team, will make an appearance and run with the Tot Trotters once again. Finish line timing and 5 K results will be managed by the Asheville Track Club. |
