In 1984, seizing an opportunity to chart their own course, Trent and his team opened the doors of Black Dome Mountain Shop in Biltmore Village. The venture saw rapid expansion, with a second store inaugurated on Tunnel Road in 1988, coinciding with the closure of Mountaineering South. By November 1990, the consolidation of the smaller stores into one expansive location marked a milestone, boasting 11,000 square feet of space, with accolades from Men’s Journal Magazine solidifying Black Dome's reputation as one of America's top outdoor retailers. Trent's commitment to the outdoor community extended beyond retail, evident in his role as a founding partner of Asheville’s first indoor soccer center, Habitat for Soccer. Family remained paramount for Trent, sharing adventures with his wife Debby and their three children, Caitlin, Ella, and Porter.
Debby Thomas, integral to Black Dome's success, joined the company full-time in 1995, bringing her expertise in business management and bookkeeping. Her journey intertwined with Black Dome's history, beginning as a visitor to the original Biltmore location in 1986. An avid outdoor enthusiast since her college days in Boone, Debby's transition from teaching to managing Black Dome's administrative affairs reflected her unwavering dedication to the business and her family.
